Who Belongs to the MTA?

The MTA is a network of over 200 museums across the United States and Canada.

Museum trustees face unique responsibilities and challenges regardless of museum size or category, which is why the Museum Trustee Association's membership is at once diverse and cohesive. Twenty-nine percent of MTA member museums are classified as small institutions, with annual budgets of less than $500,000. 21 percent of members are medium-sized institutions with annual budgets of $500,000 to $2 million. Large institutions with annual budgets of more than $2 million make up the remaining fifty percent of the MTA's institutional members.

MTA membership is beneficial to every category of museum, and all types of institutions are represented in the Association, including:

  • Art museums
  • Aquaria/zoos
  • Historical sites and societies
  • Science and natural history institutions
  • Performing arts centers
  • Technology centers
  • University institutions

The largest single membership grouping is art museums, which makes up almost 46 percent of members. The balance of the membership is diverse and includes all the categories above and others.

The MTA also has more than 200 individual members (members of the Patrons Society or the Friends of the MTA). These include trustees, museum staff, and others interested in museum governance.
